Guitar songs for beginners need to have a couple of attributes in order for beginners to be able to learn and play them in a recognizable manor. Everyone who's ever played guitar knows what it's like when you're a beginner. You bought a shiny new guitar and you can't wait to become the next Eric Clapton or Dave Matthews but you can't start there. You need to work up to their level and they've been playing professionally day in day out for decades. Local music stores typically have lots of guitar books to choose from and it's easy to find something contemporary that is based around a few basic chords.
I mentioned Dave Matthews earlier and I want to caution you about choosing your music. I've been playing guitar for a very long time and I found some chords in Dave Matthews music that I've not only never seen before but they're nearly impossible for me to play. So choose something that uses the common chords you're learning as a beginner. Look for music that has a nice steady tempo as well. It's hard as a beginner to be able to play at a faster tempo since the chord changes have to happen so fast as well. If you happen to like country/pop music then you'll have no problems finding some music to play since country tends to be played with a steady beat and uses a lot of basic chord structure.
After you've done your practice for the day such as scales, chords and changes, and any other exercises, break out the guitar music book and work on a specific song until you've mastered the tempo and changes. You can even try to play along with the original if you have the CD. Remember, this is supposed to be fun, so have fun! You'll also see why all the practice you've put in is necessary when you're making quick changes and mixing up strum patterns. A good guitar course for beginners will usually include a nice selection of hand picked contemporary songs perfectly suited to the beginning guitar player.
